Automated Operator Link Assignment Scheduling for NASA’s Deep Space Network

چکیده
NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) provides communication and other services for planetary exploration for both NASA and international users. The DSN operates antennas at three complexes: Goldstone, California, USA; Madrid, Spain; and Canberra, Australia, with the longitudinal distribution of the complexes enabling full sky coverage and generally providing some overlap in spacecraft visibility. Beginning in 2018, the DSN will be transitioning to a remote operations paradigm where local dayshift operators at each complex will be preparing and staffing the links (or contacts) for all antennas in the DSN. In addition, the number of simultaneous links an operator will be required to support will increase from two (today) to three. In this paper, we describe the impact of these two changes on scheduling — including modeling link complexity and the generation of automated operator link assignments. Minimizing the combined complexity of the multiple links assigned to a single operator is emerging as a key tool in achieving the DSN’s overall automation objectives. We describe the results to date of a prototype link assignment algorithm and corresponding user interface, and plans for future work that include user trials and sensitivity studies of various complexity metrics.

Request-Driven Scheduling for NASA’s Deep Space Network
This paper describes recent work undertaken to increase the level of automated scheduling support available to users of NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN). We have adopted a request-driven approach to DSN scheduling, in contrast to the activity-oriented approach used up to now. We describe some of the key constraints and preferences of the DSN scheduling domain and how we have modeled these as sch...
متن کاملScheduling of Multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles for an Assembly Line Using Minimum Cost Network Flow
This paper proposed a parallel automated assembly line system to produce multiple products having multiple autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). Several assembly lines are configured to produce multiple products in which the technologies of machines are shared among the assembly lines when required. The transportation between the stations in an assembly line (intra assembly line) and among station...
متن کاملThe DSN Scheduling Engine (DSE): Automated Scheduling of Activities for the NASA Deep Space Network
Scheduling NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) presents a challenging problem due to its size, dynamic character, and collaborative approach to resolving schedule conicts. This paper describes an ongoing project to automate the DSN scheduling process, and our approach to design and implementation of the DSN Scheduling Engine (DSE) component of the new system. The DSE is responsible for interpretin...
متن کاملTHEMIS Mission Networks Expansion – Adding the Deep Space Network for the ARTEMIS Lunar Mission Phase
THEMIS is a five-spacecraft constellation launched in 2007 to study magnetospheric phenomena leading to the aurora borealis. During the primary mission phase, completed in the fall of 2009, all five spacecraft collected science data in synchronized, highly elliptical Earth orbits. For an ambitious mission extension, the Project proposed to split the constellation into two parts – THEMIS-Low and...
متن کاملPlanning for Deep Space Network Operations
We are developing a plan construction and plan execution monitoring system to automate the operation of the communications link in NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN). The objectives of this effort are: (1) to archive knowledge of operations procedures; (2) provide a capability to assist in execution monitoring; and (3) provide a capability for automatically constructing the plan to be executed and...
